Fatherhood: Top Tips!

Top Tips for Fathers!
  1. Be available for your children. This may be obvious but make sure you and your children have first hand relationships rather than one lived through your partner.
  2. Learn about your children by interacting with them naturally. Knowledge of what makes kids tick increases your effectiveness and confidence as a father.
  3. Play with your children. Kids relate to their dads very often through play. The ways men play with children often challenges them and extends them.
  4. Help children deal with the changes that occur in their lives that are either imposed on them or occur through their natural development.
  5. Recognise the differences between the genders so you can provide for their specific needs. You may have to adjust your approach to each gender.
  6. Know who is charge. Adopt an assertive approach to raising kids. This means knowing with your partner what the boundaries are and sharing these with the children. Remember these need to change as children develop.
  7. Become involved in school and children's interests. Both education and hobbies take up a large part if children's lives so if you know little of these areas then there is a large gap in your knowledge of your kids.
  8. Teach children about themselves and others. Letting them know about you is a great way to teach and guide kids.Get out the old photo albums and enjoy the memories with your children.
  9. Have a life outside your family and work. A balanced lifestyle gives you a broad perspective, which you need when you are a father.
  10. Share the enterprise of raising children with others. Child-rearing is a community activity.
